Dr Bunnara said he had observed that women have a higher rate of kidney disease than men. The main factors in kidney disease developing to the point where hemodialysis is required are diabetes and hypertension. Both of these diseases are more prevalent in women.
“When a person has diabetes, their body is incapable of producing sufficient insulin or isn’t able to use normal amounts of insulin properly. Therefore, patients develop high blood sugar, which causes many problems throughout the body. This is why diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease,” Dr. Bunnara said.
“Hypertension can also cause kidney disease and other problems such as heart attacks and strokes. High blood pressure occurs when the force of the blood against the artery walls increases. When high blood pressure is controlled, the risk of problems such as chronic kidney disease is lessened.”
Dr Bunnara said it was not yet clear why women are more vulnerable to diabetes than men. Yet, hemodialysis can help people remove waste such as urea from the blood, restore the proper balance of electrolytes in the blood and eliminate extra fluid from the body. So this treatment has a positive effect on patients.
Dr Bunnara said that based on his observations, diabetes tended to arise in patients between the ages of 15 to 25, so this age group was vulnerable to developing kidney disease. He recommends everyone be regularly checked for diabetes.
